Handball rules for Penaltys?
Watching the Man city game tonight, Shalke player takes a shot and it hits Otamendis arm, Ref gets VAR involved, which takes a ridiculous 5 mins!!!!

Reply clearly shows Otamendi trying to pull his arm back so the ball wont hit him but it still does, outcome is he gets booked and Shalke get a penalty, score and its 1-1.

Doesnt a penalty have to be for deliberate handball??? this was clearly not the case.

Oh, and anyone see the shield in the crowd of Shalke fans with amongst other things the crossed hammers on it, Whats that all about?

Re: Handball rules for Penaltys?
HANDLING THE BALL

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with the hand or arm.

The following must be considered: •the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
•the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
•the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an offence

only thing I can think of is he didn't move his arm away quick enough due to the distance

Paul Danson was the referee that night. Sheffield Wednesday I believe.
One of my earliest games, no idea why I remember it but it was a ridiculous decision.

The spelling of 'Penaltys' is more outrageous than the decision last night

VAR will change the game as we know it, shame.

I would say that an accidental handball that stops a ball that would otherwise (beyond any doubt) have gone into the goal should be a penalty, but with no card issued.
If it ain't going in, then play on.

In this day and age they were probably more fussed and upset about not being able to get a selfie with him than anything else....

Re: Handball rules for Penaltys?
I think this thread goes to illustrate something that I've thought for a long time - that no-one REALLY knows the rules. That's partly because it's so subjective - it's never quite clear-cut so there's always some interpretation involved.

It was definitely accidental, he was definitely moving his hand out of the way, but it definitely blocked the ball from going towards the goal. I've got no idea what that should be.

Re: Handball rules for Penaltys?
The handball decision was nonsense
The ball is hit at his arm which is by his side and he even attempts to move it further away.
I understand the ref is supposed to take a look on the screen but it wasn't working so the procedure wasn't followed
He and the VAR types should be demoted

Watched the Atletico game and it was used properly to determine that contact on Costa was just outside the area when a pen had been given.
Almost impossible to see with the naked eye

Re: Handball rules for Penaltys?
The Ref was perfectly positioned with a great view and gave a corner. Here's where it broke down. The Ref is supposed to be seen making the VAR decision as well. However, his screen wasn't working. Hence, somebody else had to make the decision which is supposed to be 'clear'. To then take 5m suggests it wasn't a clear mistake. Everything looks very different in slow motion.

Re: Handball rules for Penaltys?
Right decision but too fucking long to get it right. Ball was goal bound and his arm was in line with the line of the ball. He made little attempt to get it away from the line of the ball, I’ve seen drunk blokes having a fight outside a pub move there arms quicker. The daft cunts making the VAR decisions are useless. Why the fuck they bothered with VAR with City’s first makes a complete mockery of how VAR is used and having heard about the Juventus goal that was disallowed then that is also a problem.

Sydney

The Alvin Martin thing was for denying a goalscoring opportunity and the bloke was around about on our half way line FFS.

At least with that wrong decision the ref had NO var, so it was a on the spot decision, this cunt took 5 mins!!!

I also remember Alvin Martin getting sent off years ago for handball as he was falling over, as he put his hand out to break his fall, the ball hit his hand, straight red, rescinded on appeal from memory, again wrong decision but NO var...........

Re: Handball rules for Penaltys?
They need to clarify the timings, if they can’t clearly overturn the decision within 45 seconds it obviously isn’t a clear error and the original decision stands.
I must admit if I was a ref I would tell the players to fuck off instead of standing there having them moan at you as if it is going to influence someone in the Townsend tactics truck in another city.

Re: Handball rules for Penaltys?
Otamendi handles ball, although unintentionally. Gets yellow carded. 5minutes later La Porte handles intentionally and doesn't get cautioned. What;s that all about??
